Title: Group Financial Controller (Interim or Perm considered)
Location: Scale Space, White City (West London)
Here at Avado, we believe in unlocking potential and changing lives. We are a professional learning organisation that helps people and organisations transform and grow through interactive learning experiences in data, people, business analysis and marketing. Our connected learning approach combines deep expertise, collaborative learning, scalable technology and award-winning learning design to deliver learner experiences for people who want real, sustainable change.
Who we need:
With our CFO, this role shares accountability for the financial health of Avado and works closely with the Group Executive team and Group Board, on financial strategy and planning. You will therefore need to have a flair for balancing the day-to-day activities of a value-driving finance function, with the longer-term, purpose-led actions.
Someone who can bring enviable analytical capabilities, strong financial knowledge and unsurpassed commercial acumen will thrive in this role, as you will support all business leaders in making sound business decisions for the long- and short-term.
Alongside and very much equal to the above two points, you will need to be someone who can lead both the team you are immediately responsible for and the rest of Avado, at the “human” level and in a genuine, authentic human-centric fashion.
What you’ll do:
Working closely with the Group Reporting Manager and the FP&A team, building an effective Finance leadership function.
Managing the company’s financial control framework, ensuring adherence with our compliance agenda at all times.
Working collaboratively with the Executive team and members of the business’ Leadership Forum to grow the business, formulating strategies and plans and being the owner of the long term business plan.
Leading financial due diligence and working with key stakeholders on strategic decisions e.g. financial / commercial transactions.
Providing analyses and guidance on the company strategy and influencing decision making.
Collaborating within Finance and with key stakeholders across the business to ensure P&L reporting and variance analyses are issued within tight deadlines, along with providing insightful commentary and recommendations for action.
Contributing to Avado’s planning, budget and forecasting processes, ensuring non-finance stakeholders understand variances, trends and the decisions they have to make.
Leading monthly reporting, ensuring compliance with internal and stakeholders’ requirements.
Building and maintaining productive relationships with key stakeholders and business leaders; being recognised as a trusted business partner and advisor by the Executive team, Board of Directors, potential investment partners and key internal stakeholders.
Reviewing, as regularly as required, all cashflow requirements across the Group.
Constantly reviewing the Finance processes and systems, ensuring they deliver optimum efficiency for Finance and all Avado people, and meaningful trend analyses.
What we’re looking for:
Proven experience as a Finance leader in a high-growth environment.
Ability to nurture a multi-level Finance team with a balanced approach to both the operational and commercial needs of the business.
Both a leader and a hands-on doer (where necessary); able to operate through others as well as executing on work streams directly, balancing macro as well as micro perspectives.
Entrepreneurial mindset with laser-sharp focus on commercial growth.
Ability to develop and implement systems, tools and processes that increase clarity and clearly measure results.
Committed team player, with strong collaboration skills, and exceptional communication skills.
Strong commercial finance and financial accountancy skills and qualifications.
Fund-raise/M&A and post-deal experience would be preferable.
Clear business partnering capability, at multi-level, and with internal and external stakeholders.
A genuinely inclusive mindset, with unquestionable respect for individual differences, and experience of building strong team cultures with ‘human centricity’ at their centre.
What you’ll get:
The opportunity to work in a truly unique culture, with the most passionate people, where organisational values are truly embedded and the Purpose is clear and motivating.
A unique opportunity to contribute to the development and strengthening of Avado’s position in a professional learning industry estimated at over £30bn in the UK.
Full autonomy within remit of role and in a business leadership capacity.
An opportunity to operate in a test and learn environment, with a fail-fast mentality, providing risks are identified and managed.
An opportunity to be part of a business that has a positive social impact, giving people the opportunity to learn new skills at a time when many will be struggling to progress or find work.
High level of business partnership with the Avado Executive team – reporting to the CFO – which is supported by Blenheim Chalcot and our Group Chairperson, Rob Devey.
A meaningful development opportunity, and a succession possibility to Chief Finance Officer.
Reports to CFO in a Leadership Forum (business leadership) capacity.
Directly manages key aspects of the Finance team and function.
Supports the leadership of the rest of the Avado Group business, its people and its processes.
Our award-winning culture is centred on our values and purpose, balancing the support and structure of an established business, with a pace and adaptive environment more akin to an entrepreunerial start up.
The bottom line is we're all trusted with responsibility and actively encouraged to be the unique individuals we are.
In 2021 we won an award in the Business Culture Awards, and became Great Place to Work Certified.
